Nexus Student Conference 2009

Friday 13 November 6pm - Sunday 15 November 3pm
Robinson College, University of Cambridge

Thank you to all who attended the Nexus Student Conference 2009.

Following the success of the inaugural event last year at the Institute of Physics in London, the second Nexus Student Conference will be held over the mid-November weekend at the University of Cambridge, whose physics society won the vote against two other bids.

The conference will take place at Robinson College on Grange Road, slightly outside the city centre. Accommodation will be at the Cambridge youth hostel on 97 Tenison Road, very near Cambridge train station, where the registration, dinner and welcome session on Friday evening will take place. Room sizes vary between double and dorms of 8 beds and participants have the opportunity of stating room sharing preferences on the registration form.

This year's event again includes two sessions of student lectures on a variety of topics within physics and astronomy, a guest lecture given this time by Prof. David MacKay from the University of Cambridge on the subject of his recent book, Sustainable Energy - without the hot air, presentations by former students in different employment sectors, and of course the Nexus Society Awards, which will be presented at the awards dinner on Saturday evening by Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, the current president of the Institute of Physics.

The conference fee is £65 per person which includes all except travel to Cambridge. There is a reduced fee of £48 for those who do not need accommodation. Participants are encouraged to book plane or train tickets well in advance to take advantage of cheaper fares.

Travel options

We will this year offer a limited number of 12 discounted places at £32 for participants from more distant locations, which will be available on a first come first serve basis.

Representatives from student societies affiliated to Nexus are particularly encouraged to attend the conference, although the event is open to any undergraduate or postgraduate student members of the IOP and Nexus (as well as former student members up to one year after graduation).

Please note that there are a maximum of 120 places including organisers and Nexus representatives, so register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment, particularly if societies want to attend.
