The annual Young Professionals' Lecture held by the Institution of Engineering and Technology was jointly organised with the IOP this year. Professor Lyn Evans, project leader at CERN, and Dr. Tara Shears, from the University of Liverpool, delivered two engaging lectures in a double act on the topic of the Large Hadron Collider. Lyn Evans began with the history of building the LHC, highlighting the engineering feats and technological innovations achieved. His part of the talk focused on the challenges faced when designing and constructing the world's largest particle accelerator. Tara Shears then spoke about some of the outstanding mysteries and open questions in particle physics which the LHC may shed some light upon in the next few years. She explored the search for the Higgs boson, the imbalance between matter and antimatter in the observable universe, and the search for dark matter.
The lecture was part of the IET's Prestige Lecture Series and was in collaboration with the IOP, appealing to both engineers and physicists. Members from both institutions, as well as interested non-members, attended the evening at Savoy Place, which included a networking reception after the lectures. The event was primarily geared towards postgraduate students and early careers professionals from both backgrounds, and there was a very diverse audience.
The lectures were broadcast live over the internet at www.iet.tv and remain available for viewing.
Although the IOP will not be involved in next year's lecture, you can check the IET web pages and the Nexus pages for information about future events.
