The Institute has over 50 specialist groups, most of which are affiliated to one or more of five divisions. It is through these groups that the Institute helps to support physics research and its application. Groups are involved in arranging conferences, seminars and workshops in the area of physics they specialise in, promoting interaction between physicists working in research and industry, producing newsletters, and awarding grants and prizes in their areas.
Groups are of particular interest to postgraduate students who have specialised in a certain area of physics, although undergraduates are welcome to join, and there are a few general groups not specific to a particular research area. Travel bursaries to conferences in relevant areas are administered throughout the groups, and grants for student meetings and conferences may also be available.
Members can join any number of groups by signing up to the relevant networks on MyIOP.
