Entrepreneurship for Physicists and Engineers from Developing Countries

This one-week residential workshop entitled Economic Development for Physicists in Developing Countries is ideal for physicists and engineers in developing countries who would like to learn entrepreneurial and commercialisation skills.

Development of entrepreneurial skills and attitudes now forms a vital part of IUPAP’s education programme. The workshop aims to foster the culture of enterprise to help physicists and engineers to make positive contributions to their countries’ economy.

Vital aspects of the workshop include:

  • spotting opportunities
  • identifying market need
  • protecting intellectual property
  • patenting
  • licensing
  • recognising the need for confidentiality
  • understanding legal issues
  • bringing developments to market
  • raising capital
  • obtaining funding
  • taking the venture capitalist route
  • understanding incubation

The workshop also provides delegates with opportunities to engage with successful role models who are expert in their field, and to discuss real-life issues, barriers and challenges. Case-studies discussed during the workshop will help to promote understanding of the issues involved and to identify best practice.

Various transferable skills, like negotiation and interpersonal communication, can be learned from the group activities and networking.
