Lighting

When viewed from the surface of the moon, the only evidence of mans existence comes from the clustered specks of light on the Earths landmasses which constitute cities. The majority of that light emanates from street high pressure sodium street lighting. In the household flourescent tubes hold a mercury plasma at temperatures in excess of 11000 degrees centigrade and yet produce one of the most efficient light sources known to man. Although apparently mature, environmentally friendly, longlasting 'compact light sources' have made significant inroads into the household market over the last decade. Arc lamps provide intense light sources which are suitable for floodlighting and even car headlamps.

 

Lighting in developed countries are a major drain on energy resources and as such remain the focus of many research bodies throughout the world:
