Plasmas can be used to treat and create materials. In the early 1990's there was much research into the production of pure diamond from the plasma phase. The result of this work is that diamond films, tens of cm across and millimetres thick can now be commercially produced with a purity exceeding many natural pure diamonds.
Cloth subjected to some plasmas has a reduced surface energy which then enables the material to repel greases and oils - with the prospect of clothes that remain clean indefinitely. Babies nappies are routinely treated with plasma to improve their response to prolonged 'damp' conditions.
