Notice of Annual General Meeting
To be held at 13:30 on 28 November 2006 in the Faraday Room,
The Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London, W1B 1NT
The Printing and Graphics Science (PGS) Group
Developing technologies such as digital printing, inkjet, printing electrical circuits, flexible displays, active packaging and smart materials all apply several exciting areas of physics. In addition, novel measurements such as scanning probe microscopy and colour perception are shedding new light on well-established processes and materials. These areas are all within the scope of activity of the Printing and Graphics Science Group of the Institute.
In addition, the more traditional areas implied by the group name are covered: physics as used in the manufacture of paper and board, the properties and handling of sheet and web materials, application of coatings to paper, plastic sheet and metal foil substrates, their conversion for use in packaging, printing processes including electrophotographic and ink-jet, measurement and printing of colour, handling of images and information for printing.
Most of the Group members are physicists working in industry. We have good contacts with the leading companies, and with the appropriate professional bodies like the Institute of Printing. We organise a range of meetings, from half day meetings, usually in London, to a 2-day conference on Preservation and Conservation Issues in Digital Printing and Photography, held every 3 years. Industrial visits are arranged from time to time, often involving technical meetings. All technical meetings are open to both members and non-members of the Group and the Institute of Physics.
We also devote much of our effort to supporting students working in the fields. We award an annual bursary to a UK-based student of £500, and hold an annual Student Conference in the autumn at which PhD and Masters students can present their work, completed or ongoing.
The Group publishes a Newsletter approximately every year. It also holds an annual competition for a Prize of £300, awarded to an individual or organisation that has contributed a significant theoretical or practical application of physics in the areas of printing, papermaking or packaging. The winner is invited to present their work and receive their prize at the Student Conference or other convenient meeting. It is open to academics, industrialists and students working in the field.
Important News
The Group Committee is preparing a change in the focus of the group, and a push for increased membership and more active involvement. This is to reflect the exciting moves in the areas we work in, and bring the group name up to date. If you would like to be involved in this, please contact the Group Chair, Dilwyn Jones. Until the changes take place, we are continuing to run with a healthy programme of events.
Bursary
The Printing and Graphics Science Group of the Institute of Physics is set to run its Annual Bursary scheme again this year. The aim of the bursary is to assist in supporting a UK-based student engaged in postgraduate research in any one or more of the 3Ps, in particular where the application of physics can be demonstrated. The value of this award is a one-off payment of £500. In order to apply, students are asked to send a brief academic profile of themselves, an abstract describing the scope of their proposed or current work (no more than 200 words long) and the name of an academic referee, preferably their project supervisor, by email to Nigel Sherman. The closing date for applications is 31 October 2006.
The pages for the Group are currently being transferred to the new Institute of Physics website. Until this process is complete the original pages for the Group can be accessed here.
