The Information Technology, Electronics and Communications (ITEC) Group

The Information Technology, Electronics and Communications (ITEC) Group is one of the largest groups within the Institute.

The Group covers a major area of applied physics in which technology is advancing extremely rapidly world-wide. The Group maintains an interest in new electronic materials, devices and sensors and also covers the important areas of information processing and communication. The marriage of electronics systems which gather data, to those which intelligently extract information and to communication systems which allow access to the information across the world are thus all part of the remit for this group.

The individual committee members represent industry and academia in many of the interest areas named above. This helps to ensure that the Group’s meetings are relevant to the interests of a significant section of our membership. Many topics that are most suitable for such meetings cross the boundaries of pure physics and for this reason, close contact is maintained with other learned societies, frequently involving co-sponsorship of meetings. This not only brings a potentially wider attendance, and broader coverage of the subject under discussion, but frequently also allows Institute members to attend meetings organised by other institutions at preferential rates. Students should also benefit from our travel bursary scheme.

It is considered essential to allow informal discussion as well as the formal presentation of papers and the Group's half-day and one-day meetings are organised with this in mind. The meeting programme will usually include invited review papers by experts in the subject under discussion, a range of contributed papers of shorter duration covering particular aspects of the subject, and the allocation of time during refreshment breaks for informal interaction in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Group committee is always pleased to receive suggestions for meetings on topics likely to be of interest to our members.

Information regarding the activities of the Group is disseminated through these web pages, which are regularly updated, and through a regular newsletter which includes items of general interest to those working in the subject area. In the near future we intend to distribute news via e-mail, and members are encouraged to register their email address with the group's secretary.
