Nonlinear Optics in Communications
30 June, 2004, 76 Portland Place, London

A half day meeting (starting 1.00 pm) organised by the ITEC group.

The meeting programme can be viewed online here.

The half day meeting organised by the ITEC group and co-sponsored by the Institute of Physics Quantum Electronics and Photonics group took place at the Institute on June 30. We had about 30 people from the major UK academic groups and industrial laboratories in this area with twelve talks being given of which two were invited. The meeting opened with a session on Optical Switching and Processing led by an invited talk from Alistair Poustie from the newly formed Centre for Integrated Photonics. He discussed the potential applciations of all-optical processing in communications and gave us a brief review of the new centre. The other talks in this session discussed a number of different applications for nonlinearity in signal processing and routing. The second half of the afternoon was led by Jonathan Knight from the University of Bath who gave a review of developments in the world of Photonic Crystal Fibres. This was followed by a couple of talks illustrating some of the more recent developments in this field. The day finished with a session on the applications of computational modelling to optical communications system design and research. The afternoon was very successful in bringing together most the UKs major research groups in this field and we intend to run a similar event next year.

100 Years of Electronics: 2004 - The Centenary of the Fleming Valve
30 June - 1 July, 2004, University College London

Sponsored by the ITEC group.

For more details see the meeting website.

Pattern Recognition - Detection, Classification and Monitoring Seminar
13 July 2004, University of Liverpool

Sponsored by the ITEC group.

ITEC co-sponsored (along with IMechE and IEE) a one-day seminar on 'Pattern Recognition - Detection, Classification and Monitoring', which was held on 13 July 2004 at the department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the University of Liverpool. Twenty-nine people, from academia and industries, attended the event and 80% of the attendees completed a questionnaire.

A total of 96% thought that the 'event addressed the relevant issues. On the assessment of the event under differerent criteria, a significant majority (well over 70%) found each of these to be either excellent or good. Overall the event was considered a great success. More attendees would have been welcome.
