Introduction
Welcome to the new style newsletter for the IPSI group. This newsletter contains details of forthcoming events that you may be interested in and a review of events recently held or co-sponsored by the IPSI group. The events spread over a wide range of interdisciplinary subjects that reflect the underpinning nature of ion and plasma surface interactions. The group is again one of the co-organising groups of the Applied Physics and Technology Division Novel Applications of Surface Modification conference being held in Southampton from 18th – 20th September.
It continues to be a time of change for subject groups in the Institute with the new bidding for funds system now established and student bursary provision currently under review. In recent years the IPSI group committee has focussed efforts on event organisation with invited international speakers and helping enable student members of the group to attend these events and other international conferences. In addition, efforts are now increasing towards newsletter development and the new IPSI website. I would like to take the opportunity of thanking the committee for all of their hard work towards these goals.
The Institute is currently reviewing the administration of student bursaries awarded by groups. The IPSI group has a strong history of awarding bursaries that help IPSI student members to attend and present at international conferences and take part in national events relevant to ion and plasma surface interactions. The committee is very keen to maintain bursary support through whatever new scheme is arrived at. Your views on this subject, as IPSI members, are key to informing the committee of opinions from the wider membership so please do feedback, either direct to me or via any other committee member.
We are always looking for volunteers to join the Committee and I encourage everyone to consider whether they can give their time. If you feel you can contribute please do let the Honorary Secretary know. If any group member would like to contribute to future newsletters or the group website then please contact us. As always the organisation of events and other IPSI activities is only made possible by having the IPSI membership base. Your efforts in encouraging colleagues and students to join the group are appreciated.

Web Site
The new IPSI Group web-site is now up and running, and group members are invited to contribute material, as well as ideas and suggestions. Relevant technical information about IPSI-related processes in summary form with images and links to more detailed sources would be of interest, and good examples of the style required can be found on the Plasma Physics Group website.
We are keen to develop an archive section, and if any member has information (or a contact) relating to the history of the Group, even going back to the early days of the Atomic Collisions Group, please send it in. This could include photographs from conferences or meetings as well as descriptive text.
Items for the web-site should be e-mailed to rhurleyATvacuumtunes.co.uk. It is not necessary to format this: Word or text files are acceptable, and these will be edited as necessary. Links to complete pdf documents can also be embedded. Please supply captions for all images.
Events
The IPSI group organises and supports several one-day and multi-day events throughout the year, both at the IOP headquarters and elsewhere across the country through both ‘full-service’ and ‘self-service’ organised events. The group also co-sponsors a range of events relevant to IPSI activity. Please click on the links on the left for details of forthcoming and previous meetings.
Ideas for future meetings
The Group welcomes ideas from members for topics for future events, including conferences, meetings and workshops. Please contact the Chair or Secretary.
