He was Director of the Rutherford Laboratory (in 2007 is known as the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory) between 1979 and 1986. During this time he widened the areas of research of the laboratory, attracted foreign funding and oversaw the design and construction of the spallation neutron source, ISIS, opened by Margaret Thatcher in October 1985.
