Engaging students in physics

Engaging Physics Students

10.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Wednesday 20 February 2008
Room E, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Leicester
Organised by: Derek Raine (piCETL, Leicester) and Bob Lambourne (piCETL, Open University)

The meeting will explore ways of generating student engagement across a range of areas: directly through such approaches to outreach as the development of student mentoring and developments in school and undergraduate curricula; and more indirectly through the programme of teacher fellows and teacher training. The meeting will provide an opportunity to share approaches to engaging students in physics in various contexts and to look for ways in which ideas can be transferred across areas with positive benefits for the physics HE community.

The Speakers and their subjects will include:

Bob Newport (Kent) -- Engaging with the Foundation Year Curriculum;

Paul van Kampen (DCU) -- Rethinking the First Year Laboratory;

Tracey Parker  (Leicester)--Engaging students through Mentoring;

Sarah Symons  (Leicester)-- Problem-Based Learning for Teacher Training; Debbie Davies  (Birmingham) -- The IOP Teacher Fellowship Scheme;

Frances Laughton (Bath)-- Developing the Physics Curriculum

Registration:

Meeting fee: £15.00 to cover refreshments.

Those planning to attend the meeting are asked to register in advance by sending an e-mail to Joan Lamb [JL28@le.ac.uk]. Payment may be made (at the event) in cash or by cheque made payable to "University of Leicester".

Regrettably it is not possible to accept payment by credit card or debit card.

This event is supported by piCETL, the Physics Innovations Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

The IOP Higher Education Group aims to promote all aspects of physics and astronomy education in universities and colleges. Its activities will be of interest to all those who teach in departments of physics (and astronomy), and to those who employ the graduates of such departments. The Group welcomes new members; those wishing to join should e-mail the Group Secretary, Dr Eamonn Cunningham, (eamonn.cunningham@dcu.ie).
