The 2008 Gravitational Physics Group Thesis Prize will be made for excellence in postgraduate research and communication skills in gravitational physics. All members of the IOP Gravitational Physics Group who passed their PhD viva voce exam since 30 September 2006 are entitled to enter the competition and the winner will receive £250.
Please note that the student's external PhD examiner must be willing to comment on the student's research, quality of the student's thesis and the student's ability to cogently communicate their work (evidenced by their viva performance and/or seminars). Students and their supervisors are advised to consult the external examiner before entering the competition.
Instructions for entry
1) The supervisor nominates their student by sending an email titled “IOP GPG PhD Thesis Prize nomination” to David Burton ( d.burton@lancaster.ac.uk ) with the student's thesis attached in PDF format. The main body of the email should include the student's name and thesis title (for ease of administration). Please note that we do not accept nominations from any other party.
2)The student fills in the first page of the pro-forma and emails it to the external examiner.
3)The external examiner fills in the second page of the pro-forma and sends the completed pro-forma in an email titled “IOP GPG PhD Thesis Prize pro-forma” to David Burton (d.burton@lancaster.ac.uk). The main body of the email should include the student's name and thesis title (for ease of administration).
The student will not be entered into the competition unless we have both the supervisor's nomination and the completed pro-forma. Please note that comments made by the supervisor in their email will not be used to judge the thesis and that the external examiner's comments on the pro-forma will remain confidential.
The closing date of the competition is 1 August 2008.
