The Education Group

The Education Group exists to stimulate interest in, and discussion of, the teaching of physics at all levels from primary to higher education and in all corners of the UK and Eire. The membership of the Group includes teachers in schools colleges and higher education as well as physicists from industry. The Group works closely with the Education Department in meeting the needs of members of the Institute involved or interested in education, seeking to make the Institute the professional body for all physics teachers.

The Group has a programme of meetings in various parts of the country, often in the collaboration with other Groups or Branches. These meetings may be concerned with topics in physics which present special interest, with problems in teaching, with developments in educational policy or with techniques and materials available to teachers. In addition to this we have an annual series of one day meetings which are normally held at Headquarters; they are on Teacher Training, Higher Education, Access to Further Education and 16-19 issues. The Group and the Education Department plan the Schools Lecture series. The Group also organises an Annual Conference which brings together physicists from any sectors of education and industry and is planned so that there can be active participation by all those attending.

The Group is responsible for the Teachers of Physics Awards for secondary teachers and for the Teachers of Science Awards for primary teachers. Communication with members of the group is by means of a biannual newsletter.
