25 – 27 June 2008
Autrans 2, France
This year, we are running a second workshop in Autrans (25 – 27 June) along similar lines to that of 2005 (for a report of the last meeting please see the December 2007 newsletter).
This time we’d like to focus on the “the void”. We know that voids normally exist in electrical insulation. There are many questions associated with how these lead to degradation and breakdown. Indeed we’ve identified about 50 questions that we would want participants to consider before arriving. These can be downloaded from the link to the powerpoint presentation: “AutransWorkshop2008”. More specifically we don’t want to talk about the “void-precursor” phase, since there are too many uncertainties and anyway the voids may pre-exist. We would like to concentrate on the “void to tree to breakdown” transitions. In particular, we would like to clarify basic discharge mechanisms in voids, clarify tree branch discharges, and look at the effects on and in voids and tree branches. In doing this we’d expect to gain more insight into tree growth as well.
So this workshop is designed to be enjoyable but hard work for everybody. All participants will be welcomed if they are going to participate. Having said that, we will have a special opening session for new and younger workers – so it is also designed to have a tutorial nature too.

Charge Transport in Non-Metallic Solids
The meeting aims to bring together workers engaged in a wide range of investigations of charge transport in non-metallic solids. Topics will include: both ionic and electronic conduction; investigations of the fundamental mechanisms of charge transport; percolation; modelling the conduction process in both natural and man-made composite electrical and electromagnetic materials; the design and development of solids with specified conduction properties and the ac characteristics of non-metallic solids.

Possible topics for future 1-day meetings
In addition, the Group are actively considering the following as topics for future 1-day meetings/workshops. The committee would value any comments or expressions of interest, as well as suggestions for new topics.
Modelling of electromagnetic fields and phenomena (lead organiser: Hywel Morgan)
Dielectrics in biology (to be confirmed)
