Charges in Solid Dielectrics

Measurements, Implications and Applications

7-9 April 1997
Darwin College, University of Kent at Canterbury, UK

The 1997 Annual Dielectrics Society Meeting

Overview

At present we have insufficient experimental evidence to confirm or deny the conventional theories of charge injection, transport or trapping within insulators. It is clear however that a better understanding of charge dynamics is required to explain the macroscopic and microscopic response of dielectrics to an electric field.

Recent developments in experimental techniques have made a significant contribution to our knowledge. For example the measurement of dynamic space charge density distributions with high resolution, in conjunction with current measurement methods, are enabling characterisation of the role of space charge in these insulators.

The conference will review theories of charge injection, trapping and transport including the phenomenon of self-trapping. Experimental techniques for the measurement of charge dynamics in insulators and their interpretation and applications will be discussed. The role of charges in ageing and relaxation phenomena will be considered.
