Those present:
John Battye (Chair)
John Milner (Hon. Treasurer)
Paul Bartlett
Christopher Bell
Mohammad Sanduk

The chair pointed out that the meeting was incorate but he thought it better to proceed and then get advice on the matter from the IOP. The meeting agreed.

Apologies for absence:
Samantha Davidson (Hon Secretary)
Victoria Weise (Ordinary committee member)

Minutes of previous AGM: Approved

The Chairman’s Report: outlined how the group stood and fitted into the IOP as a whole. It also outlined the group’s history since its formation to the present day, including its surveys of its members, the fortunes of the services it had offered to its members and the current problems it faced. These included its member’s lack of time, or interest, to get involved with activities to the level that the IOP, as a whole, thinks appropriate.

The Honorary Secretary’s Report:   was presented by the chair

Election of Committee/Group Officers:

  • John Milner (acting Hon. Treasurer) was unanimously voted in as Hon. Treasurer
  • Samantha Davidson (acting Hon Secretary) was unanimously voted in as Hon. Secretary
  • Three persons, Paul Bartlett, Christopher Bell and Mohammad Sanduk had put their names forward to join the committee as ordinary members. All three were unanimously voted in.

Any Other Business:

  • Christopher Bell complained about the treatment he had had from the IOPon several fronts and questioned their competency to assess those seeking Chartered Engineer status, the general arrogance of the IOP, as a whole, towards engineers and their role, and the Institute's frequent lack of recognition of their involvement with engineers at all. This discussion soon blossomed so was carried over held over into the discussion period entitled, ‘The Future of the Engineering Physics Group’ set to start at 2pm.

  • The chair pointed out that the Chair of the Applied Physics and Technology Division (APTD) had offered to give assistance organising a conference if necessary.

After meeting note:

The chair subsequently discussed the meeting’s numbers with the IOP and decided that if another meeting was called in the near future it was likely to have even less attendees --- since long advanced and recent repeated notice had been given, by e-mail and print (including by way of the group’s Newsletter) of the date for the present meeting. The chair therefore decided not to call another meeting.

Note that when, for example, the Energy Group initially suffered an incorate meeting they announced and organised a repeat meeting and got even less attendees at it than at their first meeting. It is noted that the Energy Group has, like the Engineering Physics Group, a lot of members in industry who cannot, nor have reason to, give any priority for IOP against that for their employer, i.e. there is next to no synergy. In addition their work is generally less structured, i.e. more likely to suffer short term changes of plan, than that of the majority of the IOP’s membership who work for academia or like institutions.
