The Division of Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics
The Division of Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics (DAMOPP) exists as a forum for promotion and development of this exciting field of Physics in all arenas: education, commerce, industry and public service. The UK has a strong tradition of world leading research and development in atomic, molecular, optical and plasma physics and DAMOPP covers a wide range of topics in what continues to be a rapidly developing area.
The field is currently undergoing something of a renaissance with several new areas of research having developed in the last decade, for example the rapid growth in cold atom research. Many of the advances in the field have been made possible by development of new instrumentation ( eg femto and now atto second laser pulses) and several of the DAMOPP meetings are arranged to highlight (and explain) advances in methodology as well as scientific reports. DAMOPP based research in relevant to many other areas of science and technology including; astronomy, biophysics, environmental science, nanotechnology and optics, hence meetings are often arranged in collaboration with other Groups and Divisions. Since 2002 DAMOP has organised the QuAMP conference series, a conference series aimed mainly as postgraduate students. Support for this meeting has been provided both by the Institute and EPSRC.
DAMOPP also awards the annual Sir David Bates Prize.
The division has several Institute groups that are affiliated to it. In 2005 these groups were reorganised and with the closure of the spectroscopy group a new group QQQ created (commencing January 1, 2006 ).
Atomic and Molecular Interactions Group (AMIG)
The Molecular Physics Group (MPG)
The Plasma Physics Group (PPG)
The Quantum Electronic and Photonics Group (QEP)
The Quantum information, Quantum Optics and Quantum Control Group (QQQ)
The Division strongly encourages the development of greater interaction between the sectors of the community it serves and the Chairman invites anyone with views on how this important task should be achieved to send them to him.
Membership of the DAMOPP (Division of Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics) is normally through the groups affiliated to the Division.

The pages for the Division are currently being transferred to the new Institute of Physics website. Until this process is complete the original pages for the Division can be accessed here.
