The Applied Physics and Technology Division

The aim of the APTD is to provide a focus for promoting a range of physics based activities that are of relevance in an industrial context. APTD supports its member Groups by encouraging and coordinating interaction between them.  It provides a channel for communication for its members to the Divisional Affairs and Group Coordination Committee.

The combined membership represented by APTD is approximately 2900.

APTD activities include:

  • promotion of multidisciplinary research through sponsorship of multi-group seminars and workshops;
  • a biennial conference on a leading-edge research topic that is of relevance to each of the Groups in APTD;
  • an industry-relevant exhibition of the latest equipment;
  • open forum networking discussions at the conference that promote potential joint research programmes;
  • annual student prizes available to all Groups in APTD;
  • liaison with the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications, the British Vacuum Council, the UK Surface Analysis Users’ Forum, the Analytical Science Forum, PISE-UK (Plasma and Ion-surface Engineering), and some BSI and ISO committees.
