The Institute of Physics provides bursaries to undergraduate students who intend to study physics at university, with the objective of increasing participation in physics. Bursaries are available to students entering their degree course in 2009/10. Participating university physics departments are given a quota of bursaries to award to students on behalf of the Institute. The bursaries are worth £3000 over the duration of a bachelor's degree and £4000 over the duration of an MPhys/MSci degree. The scheme is restricted to those entering accredited degree programmes and to UK and Irish nationals.

Frequently asked questions
What is the aim of the Undergraduate Bursary Scheme?
Our aim is to increase the number of students studying physics at university.
Why are we providing bursaries?
We are providing bursaries as we do not want the financial implications of choice of subject unduly influencing the decision of less well off students to study physics at university
Are the bursaries means-tested?
In consultation with the Institute each university has formulated their own criteria depending on how the university felt they could best help fulfil our aims. Some universities have decided to use financial hardship as one of their criteria, but this is not the case for all universities. Others have preferred to focus on encouraging students from schools that do not have a strong tradition of pupils progressing to university, or supporting under-represented groups such as ethnic minorities or female students.
Am I eligible?
UK and Irish nationals applying to courses accredited by the Institute in the UK and Ireland are eligible for consideration.
What is the bursary worth?
Bursaries will be worth £3000 over the duration of a bachelor's degree and £4000 over the duration of an MPhys/MSci degree.
Will I have to repay the bursary on graduation?
No, the bursaries will not have to be repaid.
Are there any strings attached?
No. Provided students remain on an accredited course the bursaries will continue to be paid. The bursary will not be contingent on the future employment within physics after graduation.
How can I apply?
University physics departments participating in the scheme allocate the bursaries on our behalf. They will be able to advise you, so please contact your physics department.
