Current Position
Principal Teacher of Physics, Greenock Academy.
Initial Training
I was educated at Airdrie Academy and then entered the world of work in 1968. I worked for 12 years in the Steel industry in several posts including Research and Development, and Steel Production. After gaining a H.N.C. I was supported by my Company and took a degree course at Strathclyde University, graduating in 1975.
Career
Before the inevitable demise of steelmaking in Scotland I decided to re-train as a physics teacher in 1980 at Jordanhill College of Education and change to a career in which I had always been interested. Following 4 years of teaching physics and science in Lanarkshire, I was appointed in 1985 to the post of Principal Teacher of Physics at Greenock Academy.
From 1999 to 2001, in addition to my P.T. role, I worked for the In-service Department of Inverclyde Council as a Subject Network Co-ordinator. I am sure the experiences gained in that time will be of benefit to me in the new role of Teacher Network Co-ordinator for the Institute of Physics.
Aim/Mission
I hope that I will be able to make a useful contribution to the Institute's work in this new venture and that through time will be able to set up a valuable support service for experienced teachers of physics, probationer teachers and also provide a line of communication between the Primary and Secondary Sectors in my designated area.
