Current Position
Head of Physics, Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen.
Initial Training
University of St Andrews (1983) and Dundee College of Education (1984). I have recently completed an MBA in Educational Management by distance learning from the University of Leicester. My dissertation was on the funding of physics education in Scotland and the decision-making processes used in schools to allocate resources to physics departments.
Career
I taught at Kinross High School, Peterhead Academy and Alford Academy before moving to Robert Gordon's College in 1996.
Links with other Agencies
I have been an active member of the Association for Science Education (ASE) throughout my career and have been Scottish Chair and the Scottish Representative on the ASE UK Council. I am currently ASE Scotland Chair-elect and have edited the ASE Scotland newsletter, Scottish Science Issues since it began in 1995. I have also been widely involved in curriculum development and assessment having been a member of the Higher Still Development Unit Specialist Group for Physics and was a member and Convenor of the SEB/SQA Physics Panel for twelve years until 2005.
Personal Interests
Despite a life busy in science education I have time to enjoy some other activities including an extensive music collection and following motor and motorcycle sport.
Aim/Mission
I would like to provide effective support and co-ordination to encourage quality physics education throughout Grampian and the Northern Isles and beyond.
