Making a Difference

Making Physics Connect

This booklet contains ideas related to one theme: getting physics to connect with the concerns of the learner and with other human activities and areas of knowledge.

Issues addressed by this booklet include:

  • making explicit the coherence of the subject
  • portraying scientists as real people
  • introducing what it is like to work as a scientist
  • using case studies to show the development of concepts in physics
  • exploring science-technology-society connections
  • relating physics to the arts and humanities

The last section points to ways forward for teachers, for exam boards, for universities and for teacher training. Some contributions offer practical ideas for immediate use in the classroom; others probe how physics education might improve.
