Diversity in Academia

Women comprise 50% of the population. Yet only 20% of those taking A-level physics, studying undergraduate physics courses or working for a doctorate in physics are female. This figure drops at each subsequent stage of the academic pipeline:

In 2004:

  • 12 (25%) university physics departments had no women at lecturer or above
  • 23 (49%) departments had no women lecturers
  • 26 (55%) departments had no women senior lecturers/readers
  • 35 (74%) departments had no women professors
