The Athena Forum

The Forum is independent and is supported by the Royal Society. The other founding organisations are the Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal Society of Chemistry, Institute of Physics, and the Inter Academy Panel.

The Forum aims to:

  • Be the expert voice from within and for the science community. The Forum will, while exploring gaps and challenges, focus on identifying and commending national and international excellence in supporting women in STEMM.
  • Facilitate exchanges between UK STEMM organisations and stakeholders on progress in the development, dissemination and implementation of good practice in STEMM employment in higher education and research.
  • Ensure that progress towards the achievement of Athena’s aims continues to be maintained.

The Athena Forum launched two reports on 21 April 2009, at the Royal Society.
Report 1 - The Athena Forum Good Practice Guide for Professional and Learned societies.
This report highlights women’s career progression and representation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM)

Report 2 – The Athena Forum report on the 2003/04 and 2006 Athena Surveys of Science Engineering and Technology (ASSET).
This report outlines headline findings on women’s career progression and representation in Academic Science

ASSET 2006

ASSET 2006, the third Athena Survey of Science Engineering and Technology ran for six weeks from 5 September to 20 October 2006.

Athena’s purpose in running the survey is to provide a firm basis from which to understand and address the barriers to women’s progression in scientific careers. The survey questions, based on those in the 2003 and 2004 surveys, address the areas identified by Athena as key to the differences between men’s and women’s progression through and enjoyment of a career in science and engineering.

ASSET 2006 was made possible by core funding from the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET, support from the University of East Anglia Survey Office, Bristol On Line Surveys, and the Science Council. The Athena Project is based at and supported by The Royal Society. Athena’s other supporters include BP, Equality Challenge Unit, Institute of Physics, Opportunity Now, Pfizer, Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal Society of Chemistry, and The Wellcome Trust.
