Career Breaks

Career Break Links

The Daphne Jackson Trust provides grants for fellowships which are designed to:

  • Improve employability through the updating and gaining of new skills.
  • Help graduates and post-graduates who have had careers in science, engineering or technology (SET) return to similar employment after a career break. A ‘break’ of at least 2 years is normally required but this may include part-time work aimed at trying to keep up to date. Candidates who take their career break directly after completing a PhD will be eligible to apply for a Fellowship.
  • Be carried out flexibly, usually over two years, and involve retraining and updating skills.
  • Be held within a university research laboratory or in a suitable research division in an
  • industrial establishment in the UK.

The Trust is actively seeking more high calibre returners to apply for a Fellowship, so if you feel that you meet the criteria, don't hesitate in applying now!

Women Returners' Network is a research and lobbying organisation dedicated to helping women returners achieve their aspirations. It works in partnership across the UK and internationally to improve opportunities for women returners.

Science, Engineering and Technology: A Course for Women Returners A free 10 week online course for Women Returners is available through the Open University. The course is aimed at women who have substantial work experience in SET or women who have studied to HND / degree level or equivalent in a SET subject. The course has been developed by the Open University in collaboration with Return, a national scheme created and run by the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET.

UK Resource Centre for Women run the Return scheme that offers skilled women the opportunity to return to a career in science, engineering, technology or the built environment. The services are aimed primarily at qualified women who are trained to degree level or higher in SET, or women who have been working in a job where a degree would usually be required. The scheme offers free information and support services to help women return to SET.
