It is estimated that 50,000 females who have graduated in science, engineering and technology disciplines in the UK, are not working at any one time. Some of these women are physicists who find it difficult to return to employment, and many of them feel that they could do with structured support and advice to help them return to work.
In order to address and examine the complexities of the issue, the Institute of Physics commissioned an independent consultant to survey a portion of the Institute’s membership for career break activity, in collaboration with the Daphne Jackson Trust. Men and women who are on, or have had a career break were questioned and asked to share their experiences. (To view the questionnaire click here.) The results of the survey have highlighted areas that people feel need to be addressed, and will be used to guide our future activities, and enable the Institute to identify elements of best practice in career break management.
