Tips and hints for mentees

• The clearer you are about your mentoring needs and the criteria for your mentor, the easier it will be to search for a good match. Taking time to clarify your expectations will also help both parties save time and effort, so it is worth spending time on providing an exact profile of yourself, and choosing your search criteria carefully;

• You may not always find the “ideal” match so stay flexible and have an open-mind. It can be beneficial to work with a mentor whose experience is different from your own, to help broaden your horizons and see things from a different perspective. If it is important that your mentor shares the same professional experience, for instance in the case of mentoring to gain chartered status, then look at the tip below;

• If you are unable to identify a suitable match, do contact the IOP Careers Service to discuss your mentoring needs. They may be able to recommend an alternative route to finding a suitable mentor.
