Physics in the Field: Otley Science Festival
9 December 2013
On 9 November the Yorkshire Branch brought our outreach extravaganze to the Otley Science Festival for the third year running.
We amazed and educated hundreds of members of the public with our (very splashy) Tibetan resonating bowl, our super-cool thermal imaging camera and a fistful of diffraction-grating sunglasses. Also on show were balloon kebabs, an old classic that continues to enthrall!
For the first time, we also showed how to pick up a sweet potato with a drinking straw (pictured), an experiment that simply and elegantly demonstrates the link between force and rate of change of momentum… at least that’s how we explained it! If you think you can do better, and would like to join in with our outreach activities, feel free to get in touch with our outreach co-ordinator, Dr. Mike Ries (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Our next outreach event will be at St. Peter’s School in York on 10 January 2014, where we will be participating in Stargazing Live. See you there!
