Our First Science Through Storytelling Session

10 August 2018

Friday 13th of July proved not to be unlucky for the branch as our first storytelling session proved a great success.

Branch member Heather Campbell and IOP Regional Manager Olivia Keenan delivered the session at Guildford library to an audience of around 15 children and their parents.

The story ‘Molly and the Moon’ was about a little girl who discovers, with help from her Mum and her dog Jack, how the phases of the moon work.

Stories like these help bring science into the everyday narrative for children from a young age, and help parents and guardians feel more comfortable discussing science topics with children at home.

We ended the session by giving the children play dough and asking them to make something associated with the moon. To our surprise, and joy, many of the children made craters – something we’d told them about through the story.

We received very positive feedback and plan to roll out science storytelling on a much wider scale across libraries in Surrey.
