Recreating the Big Bang

17 May 2018

Prof David Evans (U. Of Birmingham) attempted to recreate the event which created the universe.

In a engaging lecture he talked through the science behind the fundamental particles which makes up the universe and through the research ongoing at the LHC ALICE experiment into the "primordial soup," the state of the universe just after the Big Bang. With it he included hands-on demonstrations using liquid nitrogen and cooled superconducting magnets, to explain the forces involved at the LHC and how they manage to curve the particles around the ring while at 0.999999991 times the speed of light.
