Space – So What?

19 February 2015

On 11 February, Anu Ojha, director of education and space communications at the National Space Academy, gave a lecture entitled Space – So What?, which was jointly sponsored by the IOP South Central Branch and Portsmouth and District Physical Society.

The lecture highlighted that in the 400 years since the invention of the telescope – and 50-plus years of space exploration – our understanding of the universe and our place in it has been transformed by astonishing discoveries in space science and astronomy. Questions such as has it been worth all the money spent, and what difference has space science really made to our everyday lives, were explored along the way.

Following the lecture Anu not only brought a Russian space suit, but excited the audience by making a mini comet. An entertaining evening was held by all.
