The Neutrino Hunters: The Chase for the Ghost Particle and the Secrets of the Universe.
27 January 2014
The lecture at the Kent Centre on January 20th was given by Professor Ray Jayawardhana from the University of Toronto, Canada, who was visiting the UK to publicize his new book, The Neutrino Hunters: The Chase for the Ghost Particle and the Secrets of the Universe.
His lecture, with the same title, reviewed the history of the particle that is the 'Scarlet Pimpernel' of physics. The initial conjecture was that the missing energy and angular momentum, associated with decays, was due to a new particle of zero mass. Its detection, the measurement of its finite, but small, mass and possible states required enormous detection ' laboratories' underground in mines and ice fields.
