National Careers Week

5 April 2013

As part of National Careers Week, the IOP London and South East Branch held a careers evening on 13 March at the IOP’s central London headquarters.

LSE careers events - students

To give its student members a taste of the wide variety of careers open to physics graduates, the event was attended by the following ten companies: BT, Coherent, EDF Energy, Ixico, STFC, TeachFirst, Thales, The Technology Partnership, U2t Photonics and Winton Capital.

After a welcome from the Branch Chair, Dr Mark Telling, a brief introduction from each of the companies was followed by roundtable sessions (speed networking), giving the students the opportunity to ask in-depth questions to the employer representatives.

Feedback from the event highlighted that the student members found these sessions particularly useful as it allowed them to gain real insight into how each of the companies operate.

Once each student had spoken to all of the companies present, the speed networking came to a close and the evening was wrapped up with informal drinks, nibbles and networking.

Commenting on the event, IOP Regional Officer for London and the South East, Lee Crouch, said: “It’s great that the branch has put on such a useful event for its student members. We’re hoping that all of the students will take something away from tonight and perhaps a few might even gain employment through the contacts that they have made here.”

“So far the feedback has been really positive and we hope to put on the event again next year.”
