Science in the park

17 April 2014

In March, the British Science Association held its annual event in Wollaton Park, Nottingham – “Science in the Park”. IOP volunteers, through the regional officer and the East Midlands Branch, teamed up with staff and students from the University of Nottingham’s Physics department to bring experiments to the hundreds of visitors.

Science in the park

The IOP contingent took full advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and spent most of the day outside. Using 35mm film canisters (yes, they still exist!), water and effervescent tablets, people’s attention was attracted by launching them as rockets. Varying the quantities during the day to achieve ever greater heights, the team finally managed to land one on the roof, only to subsequently discover that there was no access to the roof…

Once captivated, the visitors then had the opportunities to sample ringing coat hangers, “phone tapping”, making oboes out of straw and the incredible water proof hanky before being directed towards the further experiments being presented by the University.

Many thanks to the IOP members who volunteered on the day.
