To Infinity and Beyond!

Thanks to the help of the East Midlands IOP, Grant Gibson from Rolls-Royce Plc. has been able to enhance the learning of pupils in the local area by providing hands on rocket activity workshops.

The high pressure air rocket launch system, funded by the East Midlands IoP, enables pupils to build and launch their very own rocket to altitudes approaching 300ft. The rockets are constructed from A4 paper and develop pupils’ hand eye co-ordination skills as well as challenging my patience as a STEM ambassador ! The launch system provides a simple, cheap and reliable solution for schools who are often scared of using real rocket motors due to the mountain of HSE paperwork which comes with such activities.

To Infinity and Beyond!

The workshops, aimed at KS2, centre on Isaac Newton and his laws of motion, with discussion of balance, centre of gravity and aerodynamic control. Students are then set the task of building an initial design which often blows up on launch, much to the amusement of the children. The students are given a second chance to build a new rocket which usually results in a much more successful outcome. The feedback from students is fantastic and thanks to the IOP many more students will be able to experience exciting hands on physics.
