IOP in your area

The Institute operates locally through a network of member-led Branches and National /Regional Officers.

All members of the IOP are linked by their workplace or home address to a nation or branch. All members are encouraged to become actively involved with their branch and all branch activities are open to all members.

Each nation and branch is responsible for:

  • organising a programme of physics related events such as talks and visits for members
  • organising activities of physical, social and general value to members of the branch, thereby keeping them in touch with current developments in physics, and the IOP annual theme
  • promoting and fostering the public understanding of physics in the branch area
  • encouraging the exchange of ideas and information between physicists from different fields of expertise and areas of employment
  • representing the views of the members of the branch to the officers, Council or other IOP branches
  • enhancing the professional status of physicists, thereby encouraging young people who aspire to become professional physicists
  • assisting the IOP in the recruitment of members
  • collaborating with other branches, IOP groups, and members in the furtherance of the above objectives
  • delivering a programme of outreach activities to engage members of the public and non-members of the physics community
  • providing opportunities for members to become involved in activities including education, volunteering and to support the development and delivery of the IOP strategy and objectives.

All of the branches within the IOP are run and managed by volunteers in a committee. We value the diverse breadth of expertise and experience contained within our membership, especially within its volunteer branch committees. The core functions of the committee will be:

  • preparation of an activity plan and associated budget
  • organise and deliver activities (within the Institute policies and guidelines)
  • promote all events via the IOP events portal
  • liaise with IOP staff particularly the national and regional managers
  • reporting of activity and expenditure
  • ensure branch webpage content is up to date
  • management of branch finance within the financial regulations of the Institute
  • meet at least three times a year or at least be able to show that event planning is clearly in progress
  • assure committee diversity by involving the branch members into the committee activities
  • to ensure that there is sufficient turnover in committee membership and officer posts to properly reflect the membership of the branch and their interests.

Recruitment of committee members

The Institute of Physics is looking for enthusiastic members to encourage grassroots physics in your local area. You have the opportunity to change the way people think about physics by nominating members to your regional and national branch committees. Committee members will be actively involved in organising the annual activities programme. This includes the public lecture series, schools and public outreach events, as well as student careers evenings and much more.

Here's further information on the purpose and core functions of a branch committee, the election process and the logistics of being a branch committee member.

To apply to be a committee member of your local branch, please complete the nomination form.

Resources for nations & branches

We have a series of webinars planned to support the successful delivery of our activities across the UK and Ireland. The first was a social media webinar which looks at how branches can engage members locally in their activities via social media.
