Yorkshire Branch: Careers advice for schools and colleges

The Yorkshire Branch has a number of advisers who offer their services free of charge on request. They attend careers fairs at which students aged usually 14-19, and often their parents too, go from table to table to ask questions concerning the nature of particular careers, the routes to them, promotion prospects within them, together with details of university and other courses that might be useful. Additionally, some of the advisers can provide pre-booked time in which to provide individualised advice, usually after having been briefed by the student(s) on their interests. A few advisers can also give talks to large audiences on physics-related careers, answering questions during or afterwards.

The advisers usually come along with a display stand (see photograph above), lots of informative literature to give out, a computer display outlining a number of careers areas, attributes that would be useful, and the routes to such careers. Additionally they will have access to detailed information on careers, useful websites, telephone numbers and addresses, that they can pass on. Even when answers cannot be provided at the time, advisers will get back to enquirers with the required information as soon as possible after an event.

If your school or college would like our advisers to attend your next careers event then get in touch with the Honorary Secretary, Paul Davies AMInstP, Department of Physics, University of York, Heslington, York YO10 5DD. Tel: 01904 434626.
