About the South West

The Institute of Physics’ South West region corresponds to the region covered by the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA). The South West includes the counties of Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Devon, Cornwall; the unitary authorities of Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Bath & North East Somerset, Swindon, Bournemouth, Poole, Torbay and Plymouth; plus the Isles of Scilly and the Channel Islands. It is geographically the largest region in England, with the biggest rural population.

The South West is home to 5 million people, (equivalent to 8.6% of Britain's population) and 240,000 companies (many of them small enterprises). The South West economy was estimated to be worth around £90 billion in 2006. This is around 9% of English GDP, ranking the South West as the fifth largest economy of the nine English regions [Source: SWRDA].
