Wednesday 7 May
Extreme astroparticle physics: From South Pole to salt pit
Prof Nigel Smith, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

The speaker will discuss two different projects with which he has been involved, with the common theme of doing experimental astrophysics in extreme environments, namely the South Pole and 1100 m underground down a salt mine. Astroparticle physics sits between cosmology, astronomy and particle physics. It studies the implications for the very large scales of our galaxy - studying sub-atomic particles and processes. The two projects which the speaker will discuss investigated the origin of high-energy gamma rays and searched for the elusive dark matter particle. The talk will focus primarily on doing experimental physics in extreme environments, with an overview of the science being undertaken.

Wednesday 21 May
Looking inside the body:What is a physicist doing in the Pharmaceutical Industry?
Dr Bill Vennart, Pfizer Ltd

People’s natural inquisitiveness drives them to want to look inside objects without destroying them. This is particularly true in medicine where clinicians want to assess, non-invasively, the reasons for a particular patient’s illness. This lecture will describe the fundamental physics underpinning the most common medical imaging techniques, for example magnetic-resonance imaging (MRI) and X-ray computed tomography (CT), and how they are used in drug development.
