2005 Paperclip Competition

Regional Final

Westholme head south!

Westholme School were judged to be the best team in the Lancashire and Cumbria branch regional final of the 2005 Paperclip Physics Competition at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston on 23 February.

Their triumph will take them southwards to the Think Tank, Birmingham for the national final which will be held on 16 March. The all girl A-team chose as their theme 'Sound' and started with the old conundrum of whether an acorn falling in an empty forest makes a sound or not.

Apparently, it depends on your definition of sound - does it include the act of hearing it in the ear or not? Along the way they covered audible and ultrasounds as well as vibrations in solids and gases. All in all a very entertaining presentation.

Congratulations to Westholme School and their teacher Mrs Christine Mayson.

Our commiserations go to the other teams that also gave memorable performances.

Arnold School demonstrated fission in uranium and showed off their knowledge of chemistry with atoms of Fluorine, Iodine, Sulphur, Silicon, Oxygen and Nitrogen to prove they can also spell the word.

St Wilfrid's threw some balls around to illustrate Newton's Second Law while the two teams from Lancaster Girls' Grammar School also dealt with Sound and with Newton's Laws.
