Annual General Meeting and Special Talk
From Dipoles to Icebergs:Environmental Magnetism
Are soils, dusts, sediments, or organisms 'magnetic'?.......you might not normally think so but many of these materials contain tiny amounts of magnetic crystals; the amount, type and size of these mineral grains can record a wealth of information on past environmental and climatic changes. In this talk, we'll see how magnetism can tell us how vast flotillas of icebergs have repeatedly broken free, from N. American/ European ice sheets, and sailed across the N. Atlantic, as far as the S. tip of Portugal.........how rainfall over Asia has waxed and waned through glacial/interglacial climate stages......and how we can trace present industrial and vehicle pollution by simple measurements of the magnetism of soils and tree leaves.
Professor Barbara Maher, Chree Medal and Prize Winner 2005, Lancaster University.
The venue is NOT the George Fox building but the Cavendish Colloquium Room which is part of the Faraday Lecture complex, next to the Physics Department. See the map in LANBRIA or http://www.lancs.ac.uk/travel/travel.htm . We will be providing food and drink at the AGM. Please do come along and make our meeting quorate. There will be no pressure to volunteer for anything!
