The Rutherford Medal and Prize
History
The Council of The Physical Society instituted the Rutherford Memorial Lecture in 1939, in memory of Lord Rutherford of Nelson. Owing to the outbreak of war, the first lecture was not given until 1942. For reasons similar to those noted under the Guthrie Medal and Prize, Council changed this award to a Medal and Prize in 1965. The first award was made in 1966.
Terms
The award shall be made in even dated years for contributions to nuclear physics, elementary particle physics or nuclear technology. The medal shall be bronze and shall be accompanied by a prize of £1000 and a certificate. The Medallist may be invited to give a lecture, at an appropriate conference, in the year in which the award is made.
