The Duddell Medal

History

This medal was instituted by the Council of The Physical Society in 1923 as a memorial to William du Bois Duddell, the inventor of the electromagnetic oscillograph. Between 1961 and 1973 the award was made in alternate years.

Terms

The award will be made annually to an individual or team for outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge through the application of physics, including invention or design of scientific instruments or by the discovery of materials used in their construction. The medal will be bronze and will be accompanied by a prize of £1000 and a certificate. The medallist may be invited to write an article, for publication in Physics World, about the work for which the award was given.
