Subject Awards

These were formally the Senior Awards. These medals are canvassed each year and awarded at least once every three years. They can be awarded to individuals or where appropriate to teams.

Previously the Chree medal and prize

Appleton medal and prize

The award shall be made for distinguished research in environmental, earth or atmospheric physics.

  
The Bragg Medal

Bragg medal and prize

The award shall be made for significant contributions to physics education. It is intended to make this award for leading and innovative contributions to the teaching of physics such that encouragement will be given to people active in developing new methods and approaches.

Chadwick medal and prize

The award shall be made for distinguished research in particle physics.

Franklin medal and prize

The award shall be made for distinguished research in physics applied to the life sciences.

  

Previously the Duddell medal and prize

Gabor medal and prize

The award shall be made for distinguished work in the application of physics in an industrial, commercial or business context, including work that has enhanced the economic or social wellbeing of the UK or Ireland.

Hoyle medal and prize

The award shall be made for distinguished research in astrophysics, gravitational physics or cosmology.

Joule medal and prize

The award shall be made for distinguished research in applied physics.

  
The Kelvin Medal

Kelvin medal and prize

The award shall be made for outstanding contributions to the public understanding of physics.

  
 

Mott medal and prize

The award shall be made in recognition of distinguished research in condensed matter or materials physics.

This medal and prize has been generously endowed by Sir Nevill Mott’s family.

Payne-Gaposchkin medal and prize

The award shall be made for distinguished research in plasma, solar or space physics.

Rayleigh medal and prize

The award shall be made for distinguished research in theoretical, mathematical or computational physics.

  
The Rutherford Medal

Rutherford medal and prize

The award shall be made for distinguished research in nuclear physics or nuclear technology.

The award shall be made for distinguished research in surface or nanoscale physics.

JJ Thomson medal and prize

The award shall be made for distinguished research in atomic or molecular physics.

  
The Young Medal

Young medal and prize

The award shall be made for distinguished research in optics, including work related to physics outside the visible region.
