Grants and programmes

The IOP provides financial support allowing members of the physics community from the UK and Ireland to carry out various activities – including research projects, exchange lectureships and attending conferences – internationally.

Virdee Grant

Thanks to a donation from Professor Sir Tejinder Virdee, the IOP is looking to award a number of small grants (£500 to £2,000) in 2018 that will enable members of the physics community based in the UK and Ireland to undertake activities that will support the development of science and technology in sub-Saharan Africa.

The grants can be used as travel awards, to purchase material/software/equipment, to pay for services for existing collaborations, or preferably for kick-starting new initiatives. For more information please or click here.

The application period for 2018 is now closed.

International member grant

To support our members and their activities around the world the IOP has initiated a new grant. The grant is designed to support IOP members who are based overseas (i.e. outside the UK and Ireland) that wish to run events in partnership with their national physical societies, arrange networking events for physicists in their country, run outreach events in the community or any other activity that would be of benefit to the development and/or promotion of physics in their country of current residence.

The IOP will make £1,000 available twice a year (April and September) and a maximum of £500 per activity will be awarded. Members are welcome to apply for the grant each time it is open; however, they will be encouraged to present a different idea if they have previously received funding through this initiative. Those interested in applying for the grant are required to submit an application form. Through the form members will be asked to outline the nature of their activity and describe how the funds will be spent.

Members will be asked to submit a report to the IOP shortly after their activity has taken place. It should outline the specifics of the activity and be no more than 500 words. Members will also be asked to take photos and, where possible, create video content around the event. The IOP would like to promote the work that members do through the grant and share this with the wider membership. Videoing can be done through a mobile phone or tablet.

The application period will re-open on the 12 September 2018. Members who are interested in applying should submit an application form to Please note that applications received before the 12 September will not be accepted. All questions about the grant can be directed to the international team at

Cockcroft and Walton/Homi Bhabha Lecturer Exchange Programme

To strengthen cooperation between the IOP and the Indian Physics Association, both societies have agreed on an exchange lectureship scheme. This scheme allows for eminent physicists from India as well as the UK and Ireland to give lectures in their exchange country, with lectures taking place in India and in the UK and Ireland in alternate years. The lectures taking place in India are known as the Cockcroft and Walton Lectures, while lectures in the UK and Ireland are called the Homi Bhabha Visiting Lectures. ICO and IOP Travelling Lecturer Programme

The IOP is supporting the International Commission for Optics (ICO) in sponsoring a travelling lecturer programme that enables scientists of international reputation to lecture on modern aspects of optics, particularly in developing countries. See further information.

Research Student Conference Fund

The IOP provides financial support to research students to attend international meetings and major national meetings. See further information.

C R Barber Trust

The C R Barber Trust Fund is open to Associate Members of the IOP, who are in the early stages of their career, and who wish to attend an overseas conference. See further information.

Early Career Researchers Fund for Group Members

The Institute of Physics provides financial support to early career researchers to attend international meetings and visit international facilities. See further information.

Carer's fund

The Carer's fund is available to members who may be prevented from attending international conferences and events related to physics because of the extra costs incurred for caring for dependents while they are travelling. Members can apply for a grant of up to £250 to help with those costs. For more information please visit the IOP Carer's fund information page where you will find more information on eligibility and how to apply.
