Workshops in South Africa: Durban

21 August 2013

The second workshop in collaboration with the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP), International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), American Physics Society (APS) and Academy of Science (TWAS) was held in Durban (20 – 24 May 2013) and was a great success.

The workshop was locally funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and 42 participants from 9 sub-Saharan African countries attended the workshop (Lesotho, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Congo, Senegal, Ethiopia, Cameroon and SA). The feedback received from local organisers, national funding organisations, participants (verbal and written) and the South African government was excellent.

All parties expressed an interest in discussing the possibility of more workshops in South Africa in collaboration with the IOP if funding from their local government could be obtained. There was also a huge interest amongst the participants of adopting an ‘Entrepreneurship Curriculum’ developed by the IOP in their University Curriculum.

It was also very encouraging to hear news about a number of participants from the 2009 workshop in Cape Town from i-Themba lab who had started their own spin-out companies and businesses.
