During a recent course organised by the volunteers at the IOP Centre on Electronics based on the Junior High School Science syllabus, a lecturer and the Principal of the local college informed us that, although electronics is included in the Junior High School Syllabus, the Ghana Education Syllabus for Teacher Training Colleges does not include an electronics unit.  This means that Junior High Schools science teachers, without any training, are attempting to teach electronics.

It was decided to set up an electronics lab at the Teacher Training College and train the lecturers so that they can instruct the student teachers how to teach the electronics syllabus.

The three day course held in January 2014 was very well received with three lecturers rating the course as ‘excellent’ and two as ‘very good’.

One of the lecturers commented that “The activities that we were shown are relevant and capable of building the knowledge necessary for our student teachers.”

Another commented that “Our experience with the IOP volunteer is a clear manifestation of how our students are supposed to be taught.  Each lesson that was presented was followed by some practical work which enhanced better conceptualisation of the scientific ideas taught”
