Undergraduate Research Bursary

The IOP working with the Nuffield Foundation are now offering bursaries to undergraduate students to fund short summer research placements.

The purpose of the Undergraduate Research Bursary scheme is to give undergraduate students an experience of real, ‘hands-on’ research and to encourage them to consider a career in scientific research.  IOP are working jointly with the Nuffield Foundation to offer 70 physics bursaries for placements in summer 2013.

The scheme offers support to undergraduate physics students* in the middle year of their course to undertake a 6 – 8 week research placement within a university department, working on actual research projects. Bursaries are aimed at students who may be considering a research career, to give some hands-on experience in a real-life research environment. Bursaries are awarded at a rate of £180 per week (£190 per week in London), for a maximum of 8 weeks.

The application process for summer 2013 placements has now closed.

To apply for funding, please complete an application form. There is also a guidance document which we recommend you read before starting your application.  You will also need to agree to our conditions of award, before submitting your application.  Please note that applications must be made by the project supervisor.

For enquiries about the scheme, please contact supportandgrants@iop.org.

*students must be studying on an IOP accredited physics degree.
