Associate Member

This category is mainly for those in training, such as apprentices, and undergraduate students who will receive benefits based on interests and career aspirations.

We will provide career support including resources, signposting to jobs and opportunities to learn more about different areas of physics through the work of our specialist groups. Associate Members will be able to take part in volunteering and networking opportunities. Our monthly flagship magazine, Physics World, will help Associate Members to keep up-to-date with developments in physics and other services will show how to get involved particularly through the work of our national committees and regional branches.

This category will also include support to attain recognition through the professional designations of Registered Scientist and Registered Science Technician which are both routes to Chartered Physicist and Chartered Engineer.

The Associate Member category will also be open to non-physics professionals who are working in relevant environments and wish to be part of the IOP but would not yet qualify for Member category.

This category will keep the post-nominal MInstP and include benefits that are relevant to Members in academia, business and industry, teaching, science policy, and elsewhere. Postgraduates will be included in this category.

We will support Member networks through community events, and their professional development with reports and journals on policy and thought-leadership, science community web pages, journals and professional registration including Chartered Physicist and Chartered Engineer. We will also provide support to progress to Fellow.

Fellow and Honorary Fellow

Our highest membership grade gives you the recognition you deserve as leaders in the physics community. IOP fellowship is the acknowledgement and reward from your peers of your sustained accomplishments in physics and the impact you’ve made in your sector.

Our senior level of membership recognises leadership roles within our community and achievements in broader physics-related areas.

Our Fellows will be recognised for the contributions they have made to physics across all sectors. We will provide platforms and opportunities so they can help shape the future of the discipline by nurturing the next generation of IOP members.

Honorary Fellow

Honorary Fellowship is unchanged and will remain by invitation.
